We search for it, we fantasize about it and we even plan for it…
We’re all on the pursuit of happiness.
But, how can we find it if we’re relentlessly wanting more and more without appreciating what we have.
Life often hits us with hailstones so large that we’re forced to stop, and be thankful for what we have in the present moment.
Expressing sincere gratitude for everything you have in your life right now will make you feel happier. Our time can be wasted worrying about the future and what we think we need to have in order to be ‘happy’. Or much of it spent reliving moments we can’t change from our past. I’ll confess that I am the worst for this, I’m constantly thinking about what I should have said or done, or how things could have turned out if I had acted differently. Even daydreaming about scenarios that might never occur.
But we never really have these moments. They’ve either passed or not arrived yet. We need to be here. Be present and be thankful.
The one thing you should do each day is to find something/s you are thankful for. It will bring you to the present moment and put you back in control of your day.
Choose 3 things.
Any 3 things, no matter how big or how small they may seem. Examples could include your family or friends, name them one by one. Or simply for the seat you may be sitting in now as you read this. The drink in your hand or the temperature of the room.
Dedicate a time in your day to just stop, be here, and to reflect on 3 things you are thankful for. Whether you choose first thing in the morning, or last thing at night, practicing gratitude regularly will increase your level of happiness long term.
You’ll find over time that the list WILL get longer and longer. You may even begin a gratitude journal. Where you might have found the task difficult to begin with, or over thought it too much, it will become natural and you’ll begin to list things you may have once over looked.
Start now, take control of your day and find something/s to be thankful for.
